Determining If Work at Home Opportunities Are Legitimate

We’ve all seen the work at home opportunities that are common on the Internet.  Even if you aren’t looking for work, you have probably been on a completely unrelated website and seen a banner ad touting this or that chance to work from home and make lots of money.  As the Internet becomes an even more common means of communication and linking people together, and as so much work becomes more and more computer based, being able to determine whether a work from home opportunity you find on the Internet is legitimate or the ruse of a smart criminal is going to be a crucial skill.

Warning Signs

Sometimes it’s easier to spot fake work at home job opportunities offers than others.  People who are more interested in taking your money than in the work you do display some common characteristics.  The following are all warning signs that the job you are about to apply for is someone’s attempt to steal your identity and/ or your money.

•   They have no interest in your education, previous employment, or other relevant background information.

•   You have to pay a fee to be hired.

•   They are only willing to pay directly to a bank account and require your bank account information when you apply.  Most Internet companies will pay through Pay Pal or a similar service or give you the option of how you want to be paid.

•   You never fill out any tax forms, and whether your status will be employee or independent contractor is never addressed.

•   They make promises that are too good to be true when it comes to potential income.

•   The application seems to include irrelevant questions that are likely to provide password or security question hints to the reader.

•   You cannot verify the location of the company or who the head of the company is.

•   Their website has lots of unverifiable testimonials to let you know what a wonderful thing working for this company would be.

Trust Your Instincts

While we all dream of finding that perfect job that let’s us work little and make a lot of money, most of us know that such a job does not exist.  Work from home jobs are ideal for some people, but they are not a secret source of unbelievable wealth.  You should expect that you are going to have to prove yourself just as much as you would if you were going to be working in the office.  The bottom line is if you have a bad feeling about a job opportunity, don’t apply.  The potential job isn’t worth the mess of being duped by a con artist.
